has its Angel
that bends over
and whispers,
“Grow, grow.”

The Circle of Life
Zen Haiku

Life
is no brief candle
to me.
It is a sort of
a splendid torch
which I have got hold
of for the moment,
and I want to make it
burn as brightly
as possible
before handing it on
to future generations.

Dear fellow Light Being,
There is something afoot here, although I don't know what it is.
Thus summarizes the essence of the 18 year life journey from which SoulScapes has emerged from the beginning. I felt so affirmed when I was guided to this Corinthians passage on faith. That has been the only way… trusting while navigating in the unknown, taking each next step, not able to see what is developing, eventually awed by what appears, when it does.
Anyone who has given birth would relate to that description! The description also flashes me to a childhood memory of times in the darkroom. Standing next to my father I watched blank white pieces of paper waving in the clear fluid in the dark; and in front of my very eyes images emerging, slowly coming into visibility and clearer and clearer form until finally becoming beautiful images filled with tangible detail. That feels like the way Mystery shapes and reveals itself in our lives.
Growing up (1964-71) in Istanbul,Turkey, an ancient city that sits at the crossroads of East and West, gave me the amazing gift of absorbing the essence of both worlds. I was a guest living in a foreign land, experiencing an incredible diversity of cultures through travels in Europe, Asia and Africa. What developed in my young system was awareness of what makes us similar and unites us as humanity, and also that which distinguishes us as individuals and cultures. I believe that impressionable period of time imbued in me the sense that we are all interconnected — One.
Fast forward to a pivotal trip to Varanasi, India in 1989, at the moment of leaving the corporate world to become an artist. In that ancient city, I felt that the veils between worlds were quite thin. In full bombardment to the Westerm senses, everything seemed to present itself in the simultaneous co-existence of opposites: death in the middle of life; peace in the middle of clamor, crowds and movement; solitude in the midst of thousands; inner wealth and outer poverty; horror juxtaposed with irony and compassion. A sense of exquisite Beauty in all of it.
On the last day in the month-long November immersion came the forever imprinted-in-my-memory Festival of the Full Moon in Varanasi. In the pitch dark of night, the temple steps up and down the Ganges were lined with little clay dishes containing wax alight with flames. A myriad of tiny lights emerging from and glowing in the darkness… the heart and joy of Spirit were so palpable.
Five years later (1994), as I was following the threads of where the SoulScapes journey was leading me, I took a film workshop. Upon seeing my images, a guest recording artist pulled me aside and suggested that I if I made the icon Light Being into a poster, it would be able to reach people universally. I followed that thread soon after. And, with so much else simultaneously coming forward, the Light Being poster resided in a background layer of the SoulScapes vision. Over the next years as SoulScapes images were emerging, they became recognized as “bridges between worlds… emerging in tandem with and expressions of evolving consciousness.”

Unexpectedly, 13 years later, the early Light Being image moved back into the foreground. In Summer 2007, I finally made the leap into 21st century digital technology. In a web design class, I realized that the ways in which the Internet had evolved would make it a perfect vehicle to deliver the Light Being to a worldwide audience in its poster form. This intersected with my awareness and feelings intensifying every year since 2000 about the importance (and urgency!) of connecting with and amplifying light and beauty in the world. I could feel clearly as we moved toward 2008 (and of course, 2012), “the time is now.”

The image portrays what is at the core of all spiritual traditions... we are all of the light. It was pointed out to me that if the poster went out into the world and reached a critical mass of, for example, a million people, then anyone owning a Light Being would be getting “one in a million” — literally, in its physical form, and also in its reflection and affirmation of their essence. Connection to the light of spirit would be exponentially amplified — each person living with the Light Being would also be sharing with those around them.
When someone else pointed out to me that "One in a Million" creates an acronym of OM, I got very excited! OM and Light are “equivalents” — two expressions of the infinite, eternal All that is.
I sense that the Light Being, which mirrors the essence of the True Self, has stepped into the foreground at this time for several purposes. It offers us the recognition that we are each “one in a million” — that we each have an irreplaceable role to play in the larger intricately interwoven plan. It is calling to the part of us that longs to be connected to something larger than ourselves, to be united/connected in spirit. It offers a gift and centering in our Light and Truth and Peace in a time where things seem to be spiraling ever further — and possibly irreversibly if we do not take a stand — in the opposite direction. I feel the Light Being continuing to help catalyze and bring forth the SoulScapes vision — a work that, from the beginning and every step of the way along the journey, has been affirmed in its promise and potential to contribute to, inspire and serve the growth of humanity.
I am highly motivated at this time by spiritual campaigns! I have always answered the call and followed the threads of feedback that ring true in my soul, in the time that feels right. In the launch of this website, specifically focusing on the Light Being, I trust in the greater plan that something is afoot, something larger than I can see or imagine. Walking each next step into the unknown in faith, not by sight…

May the "Source" be with us all!

Namaste,
